These are the Difference Makers™
Seniors on a Mission, Inc. is a non-profit organization that exists to encourage live-alone-at-home senior citizens to live longer, healthier and more grace- and purpose-filled, independent lives. The group uses volunteerism as a vehicle to fulfill their mission and works in and around the area where they are located, Jacksonville, FL.
In 2011 the executive director, Joanne Hickox, received the distinguished Daily Point of Light award, endorsed by former President George H. W. Bush, for her demonstrated power of service to create tangible change in NE Florida. Various service project opportunities exist for the 400 volunteers, or Senior Saints, who donated 12,500 community service hours and saved local nonprofit organizations $270,000 during 2012!
Lifeline Family Center is a home dedicated to helping young pregnant women. Their goal is to enable the women to redirect their lives and become self-supporting within two years after the birth of their child. The program focuses on saving the mother and child from a life of poverty and neglect. A young woman coming to the Lifeline Family Center will receive free housing until their GED is completed or the child is 2 years old, transportation, career training, scholarship opportunities, counseling for themselves as well as their families and the baby's father, life skill classes, fitness courses, and spiritual direction.
The Snowdrop Foundation-Wisconsin supports patients and families at Milwaukee's Children's Hospital through funding for continued research to eliminate childhood cancer. Children's Hospital of Milwaukee was recently named a Phase 1 Center by the Children's Oncology Group, an award given to only 21 centers in the world and only one hospital in Wisconsin. Children benefit from the various clinical research trials which explore new therapies for childhood cancer. The funds raised also help support college bound pediatric cancer patients and survivors.
Motley Zoo Animal Rescue is a rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming facility for homeless, neglected and abused pets. The organization has over 75 volunteers, no paid employees, who are dedicated to improving the lives of animals by educating others on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. Their ultimate goal is to end the neglect and abuse of all animals, as well as eliminate pet overpopulation through spay and neuter advocacy.
A Kid's Place is a licensed, residential group care provider who cares for abused, neglected or abandoned children at their state of the art, 60-bed facility in Brandon FL. Residential services are provided for children ages 0-17. They have a live-in house "parent" who helps the children maintain consistency in their lives and simulates successful family living. Their on-site services include therapy sessions, targeted case management, medical & educational services, as well as Pre-Kindergarten & Toddler programs. Their goal is to raise the standard for residential care for all foster children.
