According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 15.8 million children under the age of 18 live in U.S. households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. Food insecurity is harmful to any individual but it can be particularly devastating for children due to their increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences. World Foundation for Children, based out of Woodstock VA, is working to make a difference in their community.

Through the World Foundation's Volunteer Farm Program, crops are being harvested and donated to needy families. The produce helps stock as many as 600 local shelters with everything from squash, peppers, apples, watermelon, cabbage, beans, potatoes, turnips, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions.

The majority of the volunteers who donate their time to this organization are under the age of 18 and most have little or no farming experience. In 2012 they estimated that as many as 15,000 people from 42 states and 27 countries had volunteered their time! Through mentoring and outreach to the volunteers, World Foundation for Children strives to instill a life-long love of serving others in their young volunteers.

The TEACCH Autism Program, based in Chapel Hill, NC was founded in 1972 and is a model for other programs around the world. There are seven regional offices throughout North Carolina. The program provides clinical services such as diagnostic evaluations, parent training, parent support groups, social play and recreation groups, individual counseling for higher-functioning clients, and supported employment.

The TEACCH Autism Program conducts training nationally and internationally and provides consultation for teachers, residential care providers, and other professionals from a variety of disciplines. Research activities include psychological, educational, and biomedical studies.

The goal for this program is to one day be the global leader in developing and cultivating community based interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Their approach is family-centered with a focus on structured physical environments with visual supports. This allows for an easy to understand and predictable custom programs for each client.

The acronym "TEACCH" is used to describe the volunteers dedication to sharing and expanding the knowledge they have regarding autism, appreciating the strengths and gifts of those with autism, collaboration and cooperation in all interactions with their clients as well as those in the community or colleagues, and the holistic importance of viewing a person as a whole, not by their individual challenges.

Since 1982, the Nebraska Alzheimer's Chapter has provided education, information and support to individuals afflicted with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the related disorders. They support the National Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association in its research for the prevention, cure, and treatment of AD and related disorders.

The Nebraska Chapter provides a wide variety of services and support for caregivers and patients such as Respite Reimbursement, a 24/7 800# Helpline, care consultations, support groups, message boards, access to educational materials and programs, classroom and web based training for healthcare professionals, and much more.

In 2015, the direct costs to American society for Alzheimer's care will reach $226 Billion. This amount is projected to reach $1.1 Trillion by 2050 if there are no additional treatments or if a cure is not found. The various chapters throughout the US are striving to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Currently, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US and the only one in the top 10 causes of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed down.

Since 1967, The Bair Foundation Child and Family Ministries based in New Wilmington, PA has provided hope, restoration and family preservation through a partnership of committed individuals, churches, corporations and government agencies. Care and services are available through 31 offices in 9 states across the country; Pennsylvania, Ohio, North & South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

The Bair Foundation Child & Family Ministries exists to provide quality care & services in a family setting for children and adolescents who cannot remain with their families. The primary mission of their Foster Care program is to ensure the safety and well-being of foster youth while working with their families of origin in their reunification efforts. They accomplish this with support (Intensive In-Home & Family Services) and/or parental training (B.E.S.T. for Families). B.E.S.T for Families is a unique program that promotes a strengths-based and family-focused model that incorporates community support and family strengths to create healthy interdependence. This program could begin while the child is in foster care preparing to transition back home or as a prevention tool to keep the child from an out of home placement.

Other services offered include therapeutic and emergency foster care, foster to adoption care and adoption, intensive in home and family services, kinship, outpatient and diagnostic services, independent living services, crisis intervention, and a wide variety of clinical services.
